Luke Hall, 26, has won the zone competition of the Rural Ambassador program.

Luke, a farmer representing the Wagin Agricultural Society, and Vicky Hempsell, a wool technician, representing the Esperance Ag Society, were the two candidates from the Great Southern agricultural region’s country shows.

Three judges – Dr Bruce Mullins (A Royal Ag Society Councillor), Mrs Jessica Hamersley (retired educator), and Mr Russell Thompson (Shire President of Woodanilling) – officiated at an event on Saturday 15 July, putting the two candidates through an extensive interview.  Selection criteria included community involvement, agricultural knowledge, ambition, style, personality and communication skills, as well as public presentation.

Over a luncheon, each candidate was asked to give a 5-minute prepared speech on their choice of three given topics.  Each chose to speak on “The seven wonders of my world” – Luke with passion for his farming life and Vicky with passion for small rural towns of Western Australia and the amazing things achieved by community.

In sashing the winner, Cr Bruce Mullins said either candidate could have won.  He congratulated both, saying he was confident of WA’s rural future in producing such fine examples.

The Saturday competition, hosted by the Wagin Agricultural Society, is in the lead-up to the state finals to be hold in Perth on 19th August.  In his capacity as Rural Ambassador at the local level, Luke attended Wagin Woolorama this year to promote agriculture, be seen and heard, and to commend competition winners.

The Rural Ambassador program, facilitated by Australia’s Royal Shows, is open to 20 to 30-year-olds who have a passion for agriculture and rural pursuits.  The state winner goes on to compete for the national title.  A platform for promoting agriculture, the competition gives opportunity to network with policy architects and industry decision makers.

Luke on goes with the well wishes of the Wagin Ag Society, the zone and his family and friends.

Vicky Hempsell and Luke Hall.

Judges Russell Thompson, Bruce Mullins and Jessica Hamersley with the newly titled Luke Hall, winner of the Rural Ambassador title for the Great Southern group of agricultural societies.
