Russell Johnsen

Russell Johnsen

Food Court 1 Friday 4pm to 5pm
Food Court 2 Friday 12 to 1pm

Eclectic may best describe the music of Russell Johnsen. His first instrument was violin, but not satisfied with just playing, he undertook training in violin and bow making as well. He later acquired a vielle a`roué or "hurdy gurdy", an unusual member of the bowed stringed instrument family. Early pictorial evidence of this instrument dates to the eleventh or twelfth centuries and it has survived in French and Hungarian musical cultures in particular. He also makes and plays the rebec, one of the ancient precursors of the violin, which itself evolved from the Moroccan “rabab”. In addition, he plays the oud, a fretless Arabic lute. His repertoire has evolved around these instruments and covers mediaeval, renaissance and traditional music derived from European cultures with some inspiration from music of the Middle East. Early influences included Irish and French, but horizons encompass village and café music spanning most of Europe.

Walter Whip was born in Brisbane in 1987 and had a passion for the Australian country lifestyle despite growing up in the heart of Brisbane. Walter purchased his first stock whip at 10 years of age and spent many hours practicing all kind of whip cracking styles. He then added more and more whips into his whip cracking routine. He then developed the skill to crack 6 whips at once and performed in front of crowds at school fetes and The Australian Woolshed.  In 2015 Walter had thoughts of taking his whip cracking skills to a show level again, then approached by someone on the Australian rodeo circuit to re-start his show he has come back in full swing with his new show “Walter Whip and The Flames”.  He has now taken whip cracking shows in Australia here to a new level, introducing his fellow performers “The Flames” into the show. Walter now performs crowd pleasing, spectacular shows cutting roses from the very trusting girl’s hands and mouths. Walter Whip is also a fire whip artist and performs fire stunts including entering a burning ring of fire, cracking 2 whips on fire.
